The construction of Food Sovereignty by socioterritorial movements: an analysis of the Emiliano Zapata settlement in the municipality of Ponta Grossa-PR

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the interconnection between socio-territorial movements and food sovereignty, focusing our study on the Emiliano Zapata settlement, located in the municipality of Ponta Grossa, PR, and linked to the Landless Workers' Movement (MST). We explore how the MST, through the practice of agroecology, contributes to food sovereignty in its pursuit of agrarian reform and improved living conditions in rural areas. The MST adopts agroecology as a form of resistance to agribusiness practices harmful to the environment, promoting a sustainable and socially just production model. This study is based on field research, including the application of questionnaires to producers in the Emiliano Zapata settlement. Our results highlight the importance of agroecology in promoting food sovereignty, respecting local traditions and cultures, and bridging the gap between producers and consumers. Furthermore, we discuss the need for public policies to support agroecology and the improvement of existing policies.
