Public policies and the economical participation of women living in land reform settlement: the case of PAA in the settlements of Pontal do Paranapanema, SP-Brazil

Abstract
This paper presents preliminary results of a survey on the participation in the Food Acquisition Program of women living in land reform settlements of "Pontal do Paranapanema" (São Paulo State). Based on the discussion on gender issue in the Brazilian countryside, especially in the beneficiary populations of land reform policies, it evaluates the "invisibility" of the economic contribution of women – generally restricted to acting with house care activities and production for self consumption – which is in transformation due either to the women's mobilization or to different public policies implemented in the last decade. Although not gestated for this specific purpose, the PAA program has contributed to the visibility of women's productive work in the settlements. The search was
developed by verifying the female participation in the required documents for inclusion in the PAA, showing a percentage almost equal to the men's one. To conclude, it is discussed the fact that the program buys products formerly cultivated only for self consumption made this women's performance possible because they were already responsible for this production.
