The Fight for the Land in the Region of Ribeirão Preto: Foundation and Organization Process of Mário Lago Settlement
Main Article Content
Abstract
The purpose of this case study is to analyze the foundation process of Mário Lago settlement as well as its social organization and production models. Data were collect from families under the employment of qualitative techniques of research (semi-structured interview), further the quantitative data gathered from the Instituto Nacional de Colonização e Reforma Agrária – INCRA
(Colonization and Agrarian Reform National Institute). The settlement was
established from a land occupation which was led by the MST - Movimento dos
Trabalhadores Sem Terra (Landless Rural Workers Movement) in 2003. At present, the settlement is constituted by 264 families, sub-divided into 20 units, and each unit concentrates 10-20 families. There are both a male coordinator and a general female coordinator, whose responsibilities are the guidance and the organization of each unit. Simultaneously to this organization, there are
coordinators, of both genders, who are responsible for the following sectors:
safety, health, education, ciranda infantil (childish ciranda – a popular dance and rhyme), sport, culture and leisure, youth, and production. The lack of public
policies in the settlement as to the areas of basic sanitation, health, education,
waste collection and public transportation has been caused frequent conflicts
between the settled families and the local government. Regarding the production the mentioned Movement has been using the area under organic agriculture shape, aiming to construct a green belt that guarantees the supply of such products for the city of Ribeirão Preto.
