Evaluation of the adherence to agroecology principles in the 23 de Maio Rural Settlement in Itapetininga/SP
Main Article Content
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine adaptation strategies that have been adopted by farmers of the 23 de Maio Settlement, located in Itapetininga (SP), in order to meet the goals and principles of the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) discourse which promotes the implementation of agroecological practices in rural settlements. This study applied a conceptual model for participatory evaluation, namely the Evaluation System of the Adherence to Agroecology (SAAGRO), which was designed to conduct this research, characterized by a methodological approach for evaluating social and socio-environmental aspects in rural settlements, and was likewise aimed at supporting those farmers in the process of transition towards sustainability and the sustainable development of rural areas. The results showed that in the case of the 23 de Maio Settlement there was a moderate adherence to the principles, which requires essential actions to improve the indicators. The methodology allowed for the creation of a list of proposals for interventions designed to assist settlers to develop and implement their action plans.
