Abstract

The departure point is connected with the changes that occurred in the rural labor relations in the Northeastern coast in Brazil, and we aim at clarifying the narratives of those peasants settled in the area who trusted in us and revealed their memories, evoking important moments of their trajectories. This has enabled us to analyze the emphatic and contradictory memories concerning the “goodness” of a boss, and compare it to the “wickedness” of another. This comparison enabled us to identify the reflections of these transformations, that is, the individual memories seen as the living experience and the interpretation of a complex historical process which affected their lives because of the domination of the landowner who either revealed his “wickedness” clearly or distanced himself by resorting to paternalistic strategies. The memories collected all led us to compare the differences between masculine and feminine memories and the rejection of the “rationality” of the bureaucratized administration.

Doutora em Sociologia pela Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP – Campus de Araraquara/São Paulo). Professora do Programa de Pós-graduação em Psicologia da Saúde e do Programa de Pós-graduação em Serviço Social da Universidade Estadual da Paraíba (UEPB).

Dulce Consuelo Andreatta Whitaker

Socióloga. Pós-doutora em Sociologia pela Universidade de Oxford, Inglaterra. Professora emérita aposentada da Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP – Campus de Araraquara/São Paulo). Professora do Programa de Pós-graduação em Desenvolvimento Territorial e Meio Ambiente da Universidade de Araraquara (UNIARA).
